Haleakala Crater, Upcountry And Iao Valley

Offer Image
Immerse yourself in past and present Maui as you learn about the island practices, traditions and lifestyle. You will also explore the natural treasures of Maui including the Haleakala Crater and National Park and the forbidden Iao Valley.

Haleakala Crater, Upcountry and Iao Valley

Think you know Maui? Think again! On this very special tour, you will discover how the island actually works- from farming practices and the weather engine used to the ancient Ahupuaa watershed system. Learn about the ancient Hawaiian lifestyle, war stories, island chants, food practices, fishing and so much more.

Enjoy a continental breakfast of pastries, fresh fruit and beverages before ascending the iconic Haleakala Crater. Commonly referred to as the 'House of the Sun', this dormant volcano rises over 10,000 feet high, giving you spectacular, sweeping views of the island. Immerse yourself in the sacredness of the summit in a moonscape-like setting, thanks to the lava flows and cinder cones. At the cozy and quaint Lavender Cafe & Farm, you will enjoy a classic upcountry picnic lunch. Enjoy barbeque chicken, salad, bread and beverages, while here don't forget to try a cup of their famous lavender coffee.

Continue next to the Iao Valley, a place once accessible only to Hawaiian royalty. This is also where King Kamehameha defeated Maui warriors as he fought to unite the islands. This lush, green valley attracts thousands each year to see the Iao Needle, a striking 1,200-foot rock formation covered in tropical foliage. While in the Valley you will learn about Hawaii's indigenous people and subsequent immigrants.

During this full-day excursion you will also stop at the Kealia Pond National Wildlife Refuge, one of the largest natural wetlands in the state. A birdwatcher's oasis harboring native water birds year-round, in the rainy winter months Kealia Pond swells to more than 400 acres, making it one of the largest natural ponds in Hawaii. In summer it shrinks to half the size, giving it a skirt of crystalline salt- Kealia means 'salt-encrusted place'.

Book this tour now for an unforgettable day savoring the beauty and culture of Maui for a true Hawaiian experience you will not soon forget.
