Rostock's Top 10 by Road and River

With this excellent compilation tour, you will see the very best Rostock has to offer including a cruise along the Warnow River as one form of transportation to and from Rostock apart from your air-conditioned bus.

Rostock is a city along the Warnow River on the north coast of Germany and known for its University. Its marvelous St.Mary's church and its busy pedestrian shopping mile. View churches and the main square which mixes Gothic and baroque styles accompanied by your local tour guide. Start your journey with an approximately 30-minute coach ride into the heart of the city, then hit the streets as you step back in time. Stand on the grounds of Rostock University, founded in 1419 and the first one to award an honorary doctorate to Einstein. At Kroepeliner Tor you will see one of 4 of the 22 original city gates still standing, then stroll down Kropeliner Strasse with its stores, shops, 17th-century gabled houses and then arrive at Fountain of Joy complete with bronze statues.

Visit New Market Square with its Town Hall, an impressive 13th-century structure with 7 pointed towers and a Baroque-style facade. Be amazed at the impressive red-brick Gothic St. Mary's Church and pass by the Convent of the Holy Cross, founded around 1270 as a convent for Cistercian nuns, before taking a look at Rostock's medieval City Wall.

Lange Strasse is another popular boulevard, this one with prestigious residential and office buildings in a true Stalinist style with brick Gothic elements. The Steintor and Staendehaus buildings offer their interesting architectural take, the former in the shape of a cube and the latter with very ornamental Neo-gothic brick.

Your tour guide will take you down to the Old Harbour and Warehousing Complex where you learn about Rostock's history as a major shipbuilding and trading center during the Middle Ages. You will also see concrete slab structures that house about 70 percent of Rostock's residents; these modernist buildings were constructed in the 1960s with the creation of the German Democratic Republic (GDR).

No tour to Rostock would be complete without a visit to Warnemuende, the charming fishing village complete with lovely villas and Captains' houses. Board your boat for a picturesque cruise along the Warnow transferring you back via the river.

You will also be given some free time in Rostock. Maybe you want to check out the astronomical clock in St. Mary's. It was built in 1472, with a calendar that was renewed in 2017, predicting days, dates, etc. spot on. It is the oldest astronomical clock in the world in working condition!

This tour is perfect for those who are short on time yet want to experience the highlights of this typical Hanseatic city, Rostock.
